An Excerpt from The Ocean Calls

Sunday morning again found Trevor and Stray deep in the redwood forest. Trevor wandered slowly through the mist, soaking in the rich atmosphere of animal and plant life. He heard a chorus of birdsong and stopped to listen. He recognized most of the calls, but several eluded him. Trevor closed his eyes to enjoy the unfamiliar music.

“Ouch!” Trevor’s eyes jerked open. “What’s that?” A glittering turquoise insect stared at him brazenly through golden eyes, jabbing its stinger into his arm. Trevor swiped at it and the bug rose into the air on iridescent green wings, passing over his head with a buzz. A tingling sensation started in Trevor’s arm and spread throughout his slight body. The insect’s buzzing slowly shifted into speech. “You don’t have much time, kid. Use it well.”

Huh? That can’t be right. Trevor opened his mouth to answer, but the bug soared away, trailing glowing green sparkles in the mist.
